Aircraft-based Estimates of Thin-ice Fraction near Sheba

چکیده
The goal of the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) program is to gain knowledge of the important physical processes in, below, and above sea ice in order to improve their representation in global climate models. In order to provide the community with a test bed for evaluating sea ice model components, we are attempting to make accurate estimates of the thickness distribution for the entire SHEBA region. Many of the characteristics of sea ice depend primarily, although not exclusively, on the thickness of the ice (Thorndike et al., 1975). Because of this, one way of extending measurements of the ice properties and processes, such as albedo, growth rate, heat fluxes, and ice strength, from the local to the aggregate scale is through estimates of the ice thickness distribution.

Changes in the modeled ice thickness distribution near the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) drifting ice camp
[1] In the polar oceans the ice thickness distribution controls the exchange of heat between the ocean and the atmosphere and determines the strength of the ice. The Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) experiment included a year-long field program centered on a drifting ice station in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas in the Arctic Ocean from October 1997 through October 1998. Here we u...
متن کاملStatus of and Outlook for Large- Scale Modeling of Atmosphere–Ice– Ocean Interactions in the Arctic
Arctic air masses have direct impacts on the weather and climatic extremes of midlatitude areas such as central North America. Arctic physical processes pose special and very important problems for global atmospheric models used for climate simulation and numerical weather prediction. At present, the observational database is inadequate to support research aimed at overcoming these problems. Th...
متن کاملStudy the effect of nano Al2O3 and nano graphene ceramic additives on the aircraft anti-icing/de-icing fluids
In the present study, the effect of nano Al2O3 and nano graphene ceramic additives in optimizing performance and improving thermophysical properties of aircraft anti-icing/de-icing fluids was investigated. Nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, SEM and XRD methods. The thermal conductivity, surface tension and dynamic viscosity of the hybrid nanofluids were experimentally assessed for tempera...
متن کاملAn Arctic Springtime Mixed-Phase Cloudy Boundary Layer Observed during SHEBA
The microphysical characteristics, radiative impact, and life cycle of a long-lived, surface-based mixedlayer, mixed-phase cloud with an average temperature of approximately 20°C are presented and discussed. The cloud was observed during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic experiment (SHEBA) from 1 to 10 May 1998. Vertically resolved properties of the liquid and ice phases are retrieved using...
متن کاملA comparison of cloud and boundary layer variables in the ECMWF forecast model with observations at Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) ice camp
Cloud and boundary layer variables from the European Centre for MediumRange Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) forecast model were compared with measurements made from surface instruments and from upward looking 8 mm wavelength radar and lidar at the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) ice camp during November and December of 1997. The precipitation accumulation, near-surface winds, and surf...
